All You Need to Know About Coaching – Einsichten zwischen Theorie, Forschung und Praxis

Wann: 24. Juni 2019, 09:00 – 17:15
Wo: Stiftungssaal O.0.01

Literary Translation in Ljubljana

The class of Topics in Literary Translation spent two days in Ljubljana on May 24 and 25, translating Slovenian poetry from English into German. Students from the English Department of our partner university (Univerza v Ljubljani) had translated contemporary Slovenian literature into English under the tutelage of Monika Kavalir, PhD. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by our peers and introduced to the poems, their background, and to sites in the city that carried significance for the works: statues of the authors, former places of work or of residence, toponyms, or simply locations referred to in the texts.

After a busy afternoon and evening devoted to questions of metaphors, meter and rhyme, to carefully weighed decisions on transparency and fidelity … and finally to orthography and punctuation, the trip concluded with a literary tour on the morning of the 25th that saw the original poems and the translations performed publically in the charming centre of Ljubljana.

Eventually, the English and German versions are to find their way into a brochure the Tourism Board of the City of Ljubljana is planning to publish in September 2019.

New research project on spreadsheet errors (FWF / iDEOS)

Spreadsheets based on Microsoft Excel are omnipresent in most organizations. Errors in these spreadsheets can however be highly problematic and a number of examples exist where wrong calculations led to severe financial loss for companies. A new joint project between researchers of AAU and TU Graz will address these problems and develop novel means that help users to detect and remove errors from spreadsheets.

The research project “Interactive Spreadsheet Debugging (iDEOS)” is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and will be led by Prof. Dietmar Jannach of the Department of Applied Informatics.

More information about debugging spreadsheets can be found in this research article.

We are looking for a doctoral student (75{c8db3f4443fb2f1c80e20e2e8420a201d47393e6b007c83f4847286f4b955a35}) and a postdoctoral researcher (100{c8db3f4443fb2f1c80e20e2e8420a201d47393e6b007c83f4847286f4b955a35}). Please contact Prof. Jannach in case you are interested. The project will last 3.5 years.

European Universities: The University of Klagenfurt is part of the alliance project UNIVERS

Aula der Universität Klagenfurt

The University of Klagenfurt is part of the UNIVERS alliance project. UNIVERS aims to create an effective university structure that transcends Europe’s national borders. The project, which involves eight partners in five countries spanning seven borders, is currently competing for funding within the scope of the European Universities Initiative.

“The distinguishing feature of our initiative is provided by the cross-border regions in which the participating universities are located: this is UNIVERS’s unique selling proposition” explained Angela Fabris, project coordinator in Klagenfurt. Viewed as a whole, the consortium comprises eight universities with 110,000 students, 8,000 teachers and researchers, 3,500 administrative staffs, and 3,700 doctoral students. They all operate in border regions and, as such, they have gathered a wealth of experiences with the opportunities and challenges associated with these special locations. Oliver Vitouch, Rector at the University of Klagenfurt, believes that this initiative harbours great potential: “Knowledge does not recognise borders. As universities situated close to borders we are predestined to contribute to overcoming emotional, social, mental and physical borders. A Europe that is comprised of small-scale units – when compared globally – has to conquer barriers in order to make great strides.”

All proposed actions are in line with the promotion of common European values and aim to encourage a stronger European identity. The “European University” forged by UNIVERS hopes to prove attractive for European and international students alike, to operate efficiently in the realms of research and teaching, and to achieve high quality results. In terms of topics, the focus will be placed on the areas of “entrepreneurship”, “language, culture, identity and cultural heritage”,  “education”, “migration”, “ecologically sustainable development”, “management of natural resources”, and “sustainable tourism”.

European cross-border territories have a fundamental role to play in the construction of Europe. The consortium aims to train professionals who can act upon and influence the development of these territories from a deep understanding of their particularities, challenges and opportunities.

These are the eight partner universities: University of Perpignan Via Domitia (France), University of the Balearic Islands (Spain), Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), University of Girona (Spain), University of Klagenfurt (Austria), University of Lleida (Spain), Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 University (France) and University of Primorska (Slovenia). The University of Perpignan is the project leader. In addition, there are four associated partners: Universitat d’Andorra (Andorra), SciencesPo Toulouse (France), Cerdagne hospital (Spain) and Pôle Sanitaire Cerdan (France), UNIMED (Mediterranean Universities Union).
