 PostDoc Assistant (f/m), non-tenure track

at the Faculty of Humanities, Department of English. This is a full-time position, limited to 6 years (non-tenure track; Uni-KV: B1 lit.b). The minimum monthly gross salary for this position is € 3,711.10 (paid 14 times a year; amounting to an annual gross salary of € 51,955.40) and may increase due to relevant previous work experience. Starting date is October 1, 2018.

 

 Tasks and responsibilities

 Independent research and further development of the candidate’s scientific qualification in the field of American literature and culture with the goal of completing a postdoctoral thesis (habilitation) within 6 years

 Independent undergraduate and graduate teaching in the field of American literature and culture; examination activities; supervision of BA and MA theses

 International publications and presentations

 Participation in department administration, teaching and research administration, and in university committees

 Participation in conference organization

 

Required qualification

 PhD degree at a national or international university with a research focus on U.S. American literatures of the (long) 19^th century

 Habilitation research project in the field of American literature and culture

 Teaching experience at the university level and didactic competence

 Excellent command of written and spoken English

 Pertinent international experience (e.g. academic experience, other forms of education or training)

Candidates must meet the required qualifications by June 27, 2018 at the latest.

 

Additional desired qualifications

 Research interest in Gender Studies and/or the Environmental Humanities

 Interest in contributing to the interdepartmental research area “Visual Culture”

 Relevant scholarly publications and conference presentations

German language skills are not a formal prerequisite, but proficiency is expected within two years.

• Habilitation in Informatikdidaktik / in Informatik / in einer verwandten Fachdidaktik oder gleichzuhaltende Qualifikation
• hervorragende wissenschaftliche Qualifikation im Gebiet Informatikdidaktik oder in für Informatikdidaktik relevanten Bereichen oder im Fach Informatik mit Bezug zu Pädagogik und Didaktik
• substantielle wissenschaftliche Qualifikation in Teilgebieten des Fachs Informatik
• nachgewiesene Lehrerfahrung im Hochschulbereich und hochschuldidaktische Kompetenz
• Führungskompetenz und Teamfähigkeit

 Erwünscht sind:

• Darstellung des zukünftigen Forschungsportfolios in der Informatikdidaktik
• Erfahrungen in der internationalen Forschungskooperation und im Forschungsprojektbereich (Drittmittel)

Der Aufgabenbereich der Professur bedingt, dass die zukünftige Professorin / der zukünftige Professor den Arbeitsmittelpunkt nach Klagenfurt verlegt.

Laurenz Kohlbach (Stiftsgymnasium St. Paul) has attended the course of Mathematical Olympiad of the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt for several years now. This year he again qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad, which takes place in Romania this year.

 

He has mastered the way there brilliantly. After winning the first prize in the regional competition for advanced students, he solved all problems and got the first place in the first part of the national competition. He also won the first place in the second part of the national competition (two days on May 31 and June 1) together with Veronika Schreitter. This year’s International Mathematical Olympiad will take place from July 3 to 14 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. There Laurenz Kohlbach and 5 other Austrians will compete for medals.

 

Laurenz Kohlbach already took part in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Brazil last year and received a silver medal there.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) uses a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to verify the authenticity of the communication partner. This infrastructure is based on a hierarchical construct of certification authorities, which certify the authenticity of the other user by means of certificates. An important component in the verification of certificates is the local certificate stores on the users’ systems. Through targeted manipulation of the certificate store, attackers can actively intervene in the authentication process and use these manipulations in various ways for further attacks. This thesis deals with the development of a concept for monitoring a non-manipulation-protected certificate store. Digital signatures are created from the contents of the memory (see figure), so that the memory contents prevailing at later points in time can be verified again and again. Modifications of the certificate store content are displayed to the users and they are offered various reaction options.

The talk aims at introducing the GLAD-project, whose aim it is to create a Global Anglicism Database.

In a first step, a brief outline of the project – as it presently stands – will be given. In planning a database or a dictionary – no matter whether on paper or in electronic form – a number of basic questions need to be addressed and answered in a principled and consistent manner.

Here are some of these basic decisions that need to be taken care of:

• How many languages shall be covered?
• What counts as an Anglicism?
• How can the raw data for the different languages in the absence of parallel corpora be “harmonized”?
• What is the time-depth of coverage? (Synchrony vs. diachrony)
• Who are the potential users and what do they expect to find in the database?

As a pilot study, the contributors worked on letter – O – as a test run last autumn. We can explore the preliminary results to study the potential of the database.

Currently, the compilers are working on letters A-C. This work is still in progress. By focussing on German, I will report on the preparatory stages that lead from potential candidates to headwords in the database. This involves, for instance, extracting entries from previous dictionaries, adjusting the data according to the set principles, checking the data in corpora, writing the “final” entry in the database.

 

Bio:

Professor Ulrich Busse is chair in English linguistics at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. In his research on historical linguistics, he focuses on Early Modern English, the language of Shakespeare, and historical pragmatics. More recently, he has also investigated the standardisation and codification of English as well as aspects of variation in English from the 18^thcentury to today. His research in synchronic linguistics is concerned with language contact (in particular the influence of English on German and on other European languages) and with (meta-)lexicography. Among his range of publications, he is co-author of Anglizismenwörterbuch (3 Vols.; together with Broder Carstensen), the leading lexicographical achievement in the field of English influence on German.
